Mrs. Helena Begum
My house was in a village called Potwakhali in Bangladesh. When we were in the village, there was so much entertainment to be seen, for example village fairs, horse racing and bull-fighting!
The bull-fighting only took place once a year and I was never able to see it take place, only hear how enjoyable and exciting it was.
I was not allowed to go and see the bull-fighting because my family was well known in the village and even if everyone went, teenaged girls in our family were prohibited as it was not thought an appropriate place to be seen.
One day, when other girls my age were going to see the bull-fighting, I secretly went along with them without telling anyone in the family. I enjoyed the bull-fighting very much but when I got back to my house, I stood outside and saw that everyone inside the house was looking for me anxiously. |

When I entered the house, my father knew right away I had been to watch the bull-fighting. He was very angry with me as I had broken the rules of the house. I know that my behaviour is nothing to be proud of, but I still look back on it fondly as part of growing up.
