Individual Reminiscences

Mrs. Chomokful Miah

Looking at this picture of a vegetable garden, I am reminded of a childhood memory which, for me, was very exciting and amusing.

Whenever we girls of around seven or eight years old used to get together and play in the village in Bangladesh, we used to be able to see the different vegetables that everyone grew in their gardens. Our family also had vegetables growing in our garden.

We all used to play together; sometimes cooking or skipping and occasionally, all us girls used to sneak cucumbers out of the garden and eat them.

One day, we all got together and chose to play cooking but were not sure what to cook. We then decided to go to my garden, which had very nice pumpkins growing. I told some of the girls to play nearby and keep watch to see if anyone was coming, while I crept into the garden and started to rip the pumpkins out of the ground.

The pumpkins were still too small to eat. After I had picked a few, I saw my mother coming towards me with an angry expression! My mum was shouting at us, saying that the pumpkins were still too small and that they were not something we should be playing with. I ran away and hid myself with the other girls.

When I saw that Mum had calmed down, I came out of hiding and apologised for ruining her pumpkins.
