Untold Stories led by award winning Momentum Arts, a small arts charity based in Cambridge, is a project that aspires to fill the gaps in the history books and archives, and seeks to unfold the lives of historical and contemporary people from our Black and Minority Ethnic communities in Cambridgeshire, who have made landmark contributions locally and globally. The project which was designed in 2004 was awarded a grant of £265,000 by the Heritage Lottery Grant in 2005.
Untold Stories a 3-year arts-led history and heritage project aims to celebrate and record the lives of Cambridgeshire’s Black and Minority Ethnic communities through 4 creative project strands: Local and Historical Role Models (including the research and publication on Joanna Vassa, daughter of Olaudah Equiano); Storytelling: the myths and legends of the Diaspora; Cambridge Untold Magazine; and Reminiscences.
The Local and Historical Role Models is its first endeavour, leading a county-wide campaign encouraging communities to nominate their local and historical role models with links to Cambridgeshire, since the beginning of summer 2006.
Over 170 nominations were received and 40 nominees were short-listed. The Top 10 Black and Asian Role Models were selected by an Advisory Panel on October 5th, 2006. The Award Ceremony and exhibition is to honour those selected and to tell their stories through an arts exhibition, unfolding a tapestry of stories that either have not been told or needs to be more widely disseminated.
